SkyLep Privacy Policy Last updated: 14/08/2026
This Privacy Policy explains which data are processed when using the SkyLep website available at skylep.com, the purposes for which they are used, and the rights to which users are entitled.
1. Data Controller The operator of the SkyLep website and controller of personal data is: Nocne Niebo Zbigniew Zając Email for privacy-related matters: zbigniew.zajac@nocneniebo.pl
2. Key information at a glance
The SkyLep website can be used without creating a user account.
The website uses Google Analytics 4 for analytical and statistical purposes in order to better understand how users use the website.
We use cookies and similar technologies through the Google CMP (Privacy & messaging) consent management platform. Users have full control over giving or refusing consent and may change their decision at any time.
Preparatory work is underway to implement the Google AdSense advertising system. Although the consent mechanism may already include advertising purposes, advertisements are not currently displayed on the website.
Selected website settings and the observer's location may be stored locally in browser memory to ensure the proper operation of astronomical tools.
Use of the device's location is voluntary and occurs only after the user selects the relevant feature and grants permission in the browser.
The server stores basic technical data necessary to ensure the operation and security of the website.
3. Cookies and data stored in the browser SkyLep uses cookies, similar tracking technologies, and browser memory (the localStorage mechanism).
Technical data (localStorage) The website uses localStorage to remember information needed for selected website features to operate. This may include, among other things:
the selected observer location, including place name, geographic coordinates, elevation, and time zone,
the source of the selected location, e.g., search, map, or device location,
the selected theme and other interface preferences,
settings for certain maps and tools,
short-term technical data enabling navigation between related SkyLep features.
The above technical data are used solely to remember user settings and ensure the operation of the website. Data stored locally may be deleted by clearing website data in the browser settings.
Cookies, analytics, and the consent mechanism (Google CMP) In addition to data necessary for the application to operate, SkyLep uses cookies for analytical purposes (and, ultimately, also advertising purposes). We use the Google CMP (Privacy & messaging) tool to manage these technologies. Analytical and advertising cookies are stored on the user's device only after the user gives consent. Refusing consent does not prevent use of the basic astronomical features of the website.
4. Analytics, advertising, and consent management mechanism Google Analytics 4 We use Google Analytics 4 to analyze traffic and optimize the website. This software uses cookies to collect information about user behavior, such as: visited subpages, time spent on the website, type of browser used, device type, or approximate location (based on an anonymized IP address). This information is processed in the form of aggregated statistics. The legal basis for these activities is the user's consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR).
Google AdSense (in preparation) SkyLep is preparing to integrate with the Google AdSense advertising network in order to monetize the website and cover its maintenance costs. Advertisements are not yet being served at this time; however, the implemented Google CMP mechanism may already request consent for future advertising purposes and content personalization.
Consent management and the option to change your decision Upon the first visit to the website, a Google CMP notice (banner) is displayed, informing users about the use of cookies. Through it, the user may:
consent to all purposes (analytical and advertising),
refuse consent (accept only what is technically necessary),
open the settings and make a detailed selection.
The user may change their decision or withdraw previously granted consent at any time. An appropriate link or button for managing privacy settings (Google CMP) is located in an easily accessible place on the website (e.g., in the website footer). Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out on the basis of consent before its withdrawal.
5. User location Some SkyLep features require knowledge of the observer's location. It is used, among other things, to display the sky and astronomical phenomena appropriate for a given place, calculate object visibility, satellite passes, transits, and other local observation parameters. Location can be selected in several ways:
by searching for a town or place,
by indicating a point on a map,
by using location shared by the device.
SkyLep does not access the device's location automatically. This feature is activated only following user action and requires permission granted through the browser or the device's operating system. Once a location is selected, its data may be stored locally in the browser.
For certain features to operate, location data are sent to the SkyLep server (e.g., an entered place name to find coordinates or coordinates to determine a time zone). The legal basis for processing data in this regard is the controller's legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), consisting of ensuring the operation of the website's features.
6. Technical logs and security When using SkyLep, the server may automatically store basic technical information related to handling requests. This may include, among other things: IP address, date and time of the request, requested URL, browser and device information, and error codes. Logs are used solely to ensure the stability and security of the website, diagnose errors, protect against attacks, and prevent abuse. The legal basis for processing is the controller's legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Logs are retained for up to 90 days and are then deleted or anonymized.
7. Data recipients and external services Data may be entrusted to entities providing services to the controller that are necessary for the operation of the website. In connection with the use of Google Analytics 4 tools and the Google CMP mechanism, the recipient of data (including IP addresses and online identifiers stored in cookies) is Google (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC), the provider of analytics technology and the consent management system.
Some SkyLep map modules may use externally hosted technical resources. In such cases, the user's browser establishes a direct connection with the server of the provider of the relevant resource (e.g., protomaps.github.io), transmitting standard technical information (including the IP address).
8. Contact with the controller If you contact us by email, we process the information provided (e.g., email address, name, message content). These data are used solely for handling correspondence. The legal basis for processing is the controller's legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Correspondence is retained for the period necessary to handle the matter and subsequently for a period justified by the possibility of defending against claims.
9. Backups Backups of data related to the operation of SkyLep are created solely to secure the website. They are not used to analyze users. They are retained for no longer than 1 month.
10. User rights To the extent that we process your personal data, under the GDPR you may have the right to:
access your data,
rectify your data,
erase your data (the right to be forgotten),
restrict processing,
object to processing based on the controller's legitimate interest,
data portability,
withdraw consent at any time (by clearing cookies or changing your decision in the Google CMP panel).
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the President of the Personal Data Protection Office if you believe that your data are being processed contrary to the law. For privacy-related matters, you may contact us at: zbigniew.zajac@nocneniebo.pl
11. The current version of the document will always be available on the SkyLep website together with the date of the last update.
